Jean Valjean - portrayed by the great French Actor Jean Gabin - is sentenced to 5 years' hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving family. Luck mixed with a few miracles leads Valjean into a position of wealth and power, from which he helps those who are poor and without hope, as he once was. But Police Inspector Javert recognizes the former petty thief, and dedicates his life to exposing Valjean and bringing him to justice for a minor parole violation. Set to the background of the Parisian revolution against a tyrannical king, Les Misérables is a timeless tale of the tragic life of a noble man.
