“Instead of tearing people down,” said Annie, director of a camp for blind kids, “try to build them up. It gets better results.” Annie’s going to need results, and maybe even a little luck, after she talks Parole Officer Mac Lawton into letting her hire Rick, a juvenile delinquent. To work as a stable boy at her camp. It’s only by accident – literally – that Rick meets Lindsay, a world-class gymnast. Both are trying to overcome stumbling blocks. For Rick, it’s his old friends that are holding him back; for Lindsay, it’s facing a world that has suddenly gone dark. But their friendship helps them see beyond the here and now. And maybe they will break free, once they help each other see what they can be.

Parents’ Guide

For Family Discussion

  1.        How did Rick finally demonstrate he could be trusted? What can you do to show people you are trustworthy?
  2.        Once she realized she could no longer compete at gymnastics, Lindsay learned stadium jumping because she still loved competing. How do you respond to setbacks?
  3.        Rick let Billy down by not keeping his promise to go riding. How did it make Billy feel? Why is keeping your word important?
  4.        Rick became so attached to Ghost that he risked his own life to save him. Is there something in your life that means as much to you?
  5.        Annie rewarded kids for making good choices, but Mac tried to punish them for negative behaviors. How can you give people positive reinforcement?
