Give Me a Sailor (VHS)
Jim and Walter are two brother sailors in the United States Navy. Walter tells Jim as soon as they get home he is going to ask his beautiful girlfriend, Nancy Larkin to marry him
This zany, fast-moving farce boasts a delightful, mixed-up set of relationships. Sailors Jim and Walter Brewster (Bob Hope and Jack Whiting) are brothers with a yen for the same girl: Nancy (Betty Grable). The beauteous Nancy has an ugly duckling sister, Letty (Martha Raye), who agrees to help Jim win Nancy if he will help her win Walter! Jim tries his best, but nothing seems to work, including Letty’s attempts at cooking and coy flirtation – until a photo of her legs wins first prize in a national contest. Suddenly Walter notices her. But not so fast!
When she changes her mind, things get even more mixed up – and twice as funny. A healthy dose of slapstick, Keystone comedy-style adds to the merriment. So do costumes by Edith Head and some well-delivered songs, including a novelty number, “What Goes on Here in My Heart,” sung by Betty Grable, and “A Little Kiss at Twilight”, sung by Martha Raye. Raye’s “bag of trouping tricks” and Hope’s “facility at handling light lines and situations” (Variety) tie it all up into a neat package.
