"You only won because you had more Irish than we did..." - Surrendering Confederate Officer
The Irish were the firs true immigrants in America: the first to arrive en masse, the first to settle in slums, the first to feel the barbs of prejudice. But after their costly service in the Civil War, the Irish also became the first group to live the American Dream.
This remarkable program tells the true stories of the men and women who came to America to escape the terrible Irish potato famines of the 1840s. Dramatic readings and songs recall the tremendous sacrifices of Irish soldiers in the Civil War, as well as the prosperity that followed in the Gilded Age. And, in rare photographs and re-creations, the 19th-century's most colorful figures - including union organizer Mother Jones, the gallant General Patrick Cleburne, tycoon Diamond Jim Brady, and heavyweight champion boxer John L. Sullivan - are brought vividly to life.
