Safari - Endangered Species: The Sumatran Tiger (VHS)
As Seen On TV
The Sumatran tiger is one of the most endangered species in the world today. There are only 2 to 500 of these tigers left, as deforestation and illegal hunting are reducing their numbers daily. It's home is the rainforests of Sumatra, a remote island in Indonesia that is home to many rare species of animals, many of whom have yet to be studied or identified.
Safari takes you deep within the rainforest to find this rare and reclusive animal. Sumatran tigers are solitary animals, as being alone is more advantageous for them to catch prey. Even so, the tiger only catches it's Friday in 5 to 10% of it's total attempts. The tiger must spend most of its waking hours in search of food in order to survive.
Most commonly, the tiger eats wild pig or deer. But they will also go after small rodents and birds if necessary. Contrary to popular belief, the tiger rarely goes after humans. On the average only 11 deaths per year are attributable to tiger attacks.
The only hope for the survival of the Sumatran tiger is breeding in captivity. Even then it may be difficult because of the dependence of the tiger on its tropical environment.
