Eleven-year old Caddie Woodlawn and her family live on the Wisconsin frontier in 1865. Caddie's mother hopes that a summer visit from fashionable and well-mannered Cousin Annabelle from Boston, will encourage tomboy Caddie to become more of a refined young lady. But Caddie feels she and Annabelle have little in common. Meanwhile, Caddie is disturbed by a growing community hatred and mistrust of the peaceful Dakota Indians who live nearby. When false rumors against the Dakotas cause an uprising, and a mob threatens to attack the Dakotas' village, Caddie makes a courageous effort to save her Indian friends. Her action helps many to consider the cost of their prejudice and intolerance.

For Family Discussion

  1. Caddie's mother said, "We must never be afraid to be kind to other people no matter who they are." Why would anyone be afraid to be kind to someone?
  2.  Why did Caddie's father trust the Dakota Indian tribe when none of the other men did?
  3. How did the rumor about the Indians get started? Do you know of a rumor that was started because someone assumed something without knowing all the facts?
  4. Do you think Annabelle gained respect for Caddie? Why?
  5. Despite all their differences, what did Caddie and Annabelle learn from one another?
