The first in the smash series! Winner of 3 Academy Awards including Best Picture.
In 1976, moviegoers packed theaters to cheer an unknown names Sylvester Stallone in a role he seemed born to play: Rocky Balboa, the underdog who got his million-to-one shot at love, self-respect and the world heavyweight boxing crown… and came out a winner.
The cheering hasn’t stopped. The film many movie-goers list among their all-time favorites remains an exuberant, action-packed heart-lifter. Its stirring legacy continues in the Rocky sequels, one of the most successful film series ever.
Rocky was a miraculous story offscreen as well. It was filmed in just twenty-eight days by director John Avildsen (The Karate Kid), and it was the make-or-break film for its screenwriter, Stallone. Other stars were proposed for the lead but Stallone insisted on playing the role himself, launching a career that includes a fistful of blockbuster hits.
“All I want to do is go the distance,” says Rocky before his championship bout. He’s gone that distance and a whole lot more. Rocky scores a knockout!
